Masterminds has a good story to tell but it gets lost in the zany characters and bad jokes

Whenever some kind of astounding event happens there should be little shock if it gets made into a movie. Hollywood loves making movies like this and recently it has been happening more often. If done right they can end up telling a great story and create a film that is worth paying to see. Masterminds takes a true event that happened almost twenty years ago and tries to turn into a comedy. I got to see this movie this week and here is what I thought of it.

Here is the plot for Masterminds:

David Ghantt (Zach Galifianakis) is stuck in the monotony of driving an armored truck day in and day out, so when his work crush lures him into the heist of a lifetime, David’s all in. Despite a pack of harebrained bandits and an absurdly flawed plan, David manages to steal $17 million, and promptly hands it over to the gang — who just as promptly double-cross him. Forced to go on the lam, David must dodge the authorities and a hit man, and try to turn the tables on his untrustworthy comrades.

I really wanted to like Masterminds, but I just couldn’t. My biggest problem had to be the character Kate McKinnon plays. She is weird, devoid of any emotion and only drags down any scene she is in. Sadly the rest of the character don’t do much to help this film either. I liked Kirsten Wiig and Zach Galifianakis in this film. They play both of their characters well although no matter how hard they try they were unable to get any laughs from me.

Yet what hurts this film the most though is trying to take a serious event and make it funny. If there had been more serious moments with a bit of comedy thrown in this easily would have been a good movie. Instead we get a comedy that most people won’t like and others will want to avoid seeing altogether. You can learn more about Masterminds on this website.

Masterminds gets 3/10. Although it has a good cast, a good story to tell and it flows okay this just isn’t a comedy worth seeing this weekend. There is only one part that made me laugh and this was the gag reel during the credits. The film itself ends in an odd way that isn’t really that satisfying. It is a shame it could have been great but instead is nothing more than a bad comedy.

Masterminds comes out today. You can follow Masterminds on Facebook and Twitter.
